5 Senior-Friendly Outdoor Winter Activities

Winter will be here before you know it, so it’s time to start thinking about how you’ll spend those cold winter days. Here in the Yukon, we like to stay active all year long. And thankfully, there are plenty of ways to do that! Need some ideas? Here are five senior-friendly outdoor winter activities.

1. Build a Snowman

Building a snowman is a quintessential winter activity that’s fun for all ages, including seniors. And if you start planning now, you’ll be ready to build the best snowman ever. Will you keep it traditional with a carrot nose and button eyes? Or will you get creative with your accessories?

Remember, building a snowman is even more fun when you do it with friends. And we think Normandy Living will be extra cheerful with a friendly snowman (or 12) on the grounds!

2. Take a Walk

It’s so important to keep moving as we age. And one of the best ways to do that is simply by walking. It helps you manage your weight, reduces your risk of many diseases, boosts your mood, and helps you stay independent for as long as possible.

You should always think about safety when walking, but as long as it’s not too slippery, seniors can safely walk all winter long. Consider joining our walking club to have fun and walk safely with a group.

3. Go Snowshoeing

Want to hit the trails in winter? Try snowshoeing! It’s an excellent way to get out and appreciate the local scenery around Whitehorse while having the traction you need in winter weather.

Snowshoeing is also a perfect way to spot some of the Yukon’s incredible bird species. So take your binoculars along and see how many unique birds you can find!

4. Attend the Yukon Rendezvous

Winter just isn’t winter without the annual Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous. Yukoners have been gathering for the Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous to celebrate and take a break from the hardships of winter since before Whitehorse became the capital!

Today, the event lasts for two weeks and includes plenty of events to keep you entertained. So keep an eye on the official website for this winter’s schedule, and make your plans for the 2024 Yukon Rendezvous!

5. View the Northern Lights

Every winter, we’re treated to a spectacular display of the Northern Lights. But since the best time to see them is around midnight, we don’t always stay up and appreciate them. Why not change that this winter?

Gather a few friends and have a Northern Lights viewing party. All you need is some chairs, blankets, and hot chocolate. The great conversation and natural light show will do the rest!

Feeling a bit peckish? Make your viewing party even better with an outdoor picnic. Soup or chili will warm you up. Or opt for easy snacks like popcorn, cheese and crackers, or nuts.
