4 Myths About Senior Living Communities, Debunked

Senior living communities are often unfairly stereotyped. And those mischaracterizations frequently deter seniors from considering senior living communities, even when moving to senior living could drastically improve their quality of life.

So what’s the truth? Here are four of the most common myths about senior living communities, debunked.

1. Senior Living Communities Take Away Your Freedom

The first thing to understand about senior living communities is that there are multiple different types, which are suited to different needs. If you are still relatively healthy and able to make your own decisions, there’s no reason moving to a senior living community should equate to a loss of freedom.

In fact, many seniors find that they feel more free and independent in a senior living community. That’s because senior living communities like Normandy Living are designed to be accessible and provide amenities like housekeeping, dining services, and transportation. So instead of worrying about things like household chores, home repairs, cooking, and driving, you have the time and ability to pursue hobbies, meet with friends and family, or do anything else you enjoy.

2. Senior Living Communities Are Boring

Many people think senior living communities are boring places, where you’ll spend most of your time staring at a wall. That couldn’t be farther from the truth! Senior living communities typically offer recreational programming. And because you’re surrounded by other seniors, it’s easy to make new friends.

3. Senior Living Communities Are Expensive

It’s true that when you first look at the price of senior living, it may be significantly more than your rent or mortgage. But it’s important to stop and think about everything that’s included in that fee. When you live in your own home or apartment, you’re responsible for a ton of expenses besides your rent or mortgage. For example, you need to pay for insurance, utilities, repairs, taxes, gas, car maintenance, and more. You also need to mow your lawn or pay someone to do it. The list goes on and on.

When you move to a senior living community, all those bills are included in the fee. Plus, you have entertainment, security, concierge services, meals, and more. So when you add all those expenses up, senior living communities aren’t as expensive as you might think. In fact, they can be a great deal! See what’s included in our fee here.

4. Senior Living Communities Are Like Institutions

If you’ve been picturing hospital beds, bare fluorescent lights, and uncomfortable vinyl chairs, it’s time to update your perceptions of senior living communities! In reality, senior living communities are often quite comfortable, and they’re more like an apartment complex or resort than an institution!

For example, at Normandy Living, you have your own suite, which we stress is your home. You can furnish and decorate it any way you want! Each suite includes a comfortable living area and kitchenette. Plus, many of our suites also have a balcony or patio. And there are multiple common areas, too, like lounges, an exercise room, dining room, courtyard, and more. You can even bring your pet!

Myths about senior living communities abound. But in reality, senior living communities often provide seniors with more comfort, freedom, and opportunities to pursue social and recreational activities than they have living on their own.
