6 Self-Care Tips for Independent Seniors
Most seniors who move to independent living do so because they want to remain, well, independent. And one of the best ways to do that is to engage in self-care. That’s because a good self-care routine helps you stay healthy, happy, and independent for as long as possible.
Need a little help getting started? Here are six self-care tips for independent seniors.
1. Make Healthy Choices About What You Consume
What you consume has a big impact on your health. For example, you probably won’t feel very well if you live off of fast food and sugary snacks. Instead, choose nutritious foods that help you stay healthy, make sure you’re taking the right vitamins, limit alcohol and caffeine consumption, and avoid tobacco and other drugs.
2. Get Regular Exercise
Staying active as you age helps keep your bones and muscles strong, your joints mobile, and your whole body functioning as it should. So carve out some time to exercise at least a few times a week. You may enjoy playing a favorite sport, using exercise videos in your apartment, or joining our walking club to help you stay in shape.
3. Be Mindful
Seniors often have worries about health, family, finances, and the future. And it’s all too easy for these worries to become overwhelming. So take time out of your day to practice mindfulness. Consider trying meditation, writing down things you are grateful for, or joining a yoga class. These are all wonderful ways to help you manage stress and reconnect with the joys of life.
4. Enjoy Hobbies
Doing the things you love helps you have fun, relieve stress, and keep your mind sharp. So enjoy your hobbies every day. And if you don’t currently have any hobbies, try some activities until you find one you like. Sports, gardening, and photography are fun hobbies to try. Or keep an eye on the activities schedule for classes and clubs you might enjoy, like Drum Circle, Game Masters, or Needlers and Knot.
5. Stay Connected
Seniors often struggle with feelings of loneliness, so it’s important to stay connected to friends and family. However, that’s sometimes easier said than done because work and school schedules or physical distance may create barriers. Fortunately, there are things you can do to help. For example, try scheduling regular phone calls and video chats, make plans to get together as often as you can, or send old-fashioned letters and gifts in the mail.
6. Find Your Community
Belonging to a community is vital for your mental health. It gives you a sense of purpose, helps you find friends, and provides you with a network of support when you need it. So it’s important to find your community. Making friends with others in your independent living community is a great place to start. However, you may also wish to volunteer for charities that are close to your heart, attend a place of worship, or become a member of a club in your city.
