Celebrate Canada Day in the Yukon!
July 1 is Canada Day, and we at Normandy Living can’t wait to celebrate! There are plenty of Canada Day activities right here in the Yukon, so it’s time to start making your plans. Here are some of the best ways to celebrate Canada Day in the Yukon.
Join the Fun at Shipyards Park
Here in Whitehorse, the most popular way to celebrate Canada Day is to join the fun at our own Shipyards Park. Each year, the Whitehorse Legion organizes Canada Day events, and it’s always a good time.
This year, the Canada Day celebration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a Knights of Columbus Pancake Breakfast. The parade is scheduled to start at 11:00. And according to the Whitehorse Legion website, you can still apply to be a participant in the parade, if that’s something that interests you.
11:57 a.m. marks the beginning of the opening ceremony for the celebration, followed by the raising of the Canadian flag and the cutting of the official Canada Day Cake. Then, the afternoon and evening offer plenty of entertainment and activities, including Yukon performers, a beer garden, circus performers, and face painting. The beer garden closes at 8:00 p.m., while the entertainment continues until 9:00 p.m.
If you like live music, be sure to visit the main stage to hear this year’s performers. Two of the highlighted performers this year include youth group Cows Go Moo and folk artist Gordie Tentrees, who is scheduled to perform at 4:30 p.m.
Games and other attractions are also available, including a bouncy castle and dunk tank. Plus, you won’t want to miss all the excitement of the firefighter kiddie combat event!
The Whitehorse Legion is also looking for volunteers for the Canada Day celebration. Contact them directly if you are interested in volunteering.
Take a Trip to Dawson City
If you fancy getting out of Whitehorse for the day, take a trip to Dawson City to take part in the Canada Day Celebrations happening there from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Enjoy a parade, bike rodeo, live music, fairground games, cake, and more. Participation in the Dawson City parade is also open to everyone.
Keep an eye on the City of Dawson Parks and Recreation Facebook Page for the most current schedule of events.
Celebrate Virtually
Want to Celebrate Canada Day without leaving the comforts of home? No problem! You can stream the Capitol Region Canada Day Celebrations right from your suite. The Daytime Ceremony will be available to stream starting at 11:45 a.m. ET via CBC and Radio Canada. And the Evening Show will become available beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET.
The Daytime Ceremony will focus on Canada’s diversity and important anniversaries, with a moment of Indigenous reflection to open the ceremony. Multiple artists will then perform, including Katia Rock, Pierre Kwenders, Diyet, and more.
Later, the Evening Show consists of a two-hour concert featuring a variety of artists, like Jann Arden, Jojo Mason, Dax, Josh Q, and many others.
However you choose to celebrate this year, we hope you have a wonderful Canada Day! And don’t forget to keep an eye on Normandy Living's own activities schedule for more fun activities and events!
