Is Independent Senior Living Right for You?

As we age, we all want to remain as happy and independent as possible. While moving is always a big decision, you may find that making the choice to embrace senior living actually gives you more freedom and opportunities to do the things you love. Here’s what you should consider when deciding whether independent senior living is right for you.

What Sort of Lifestyle Would You Like to Lead?

Many people are under the impression that moving to independent senior living means sacrificing their freedom, and they often equate it with assisted living or nursing homes. That couldn’t be farther from the truth. In fact, independent living focuses on just what the name suggests--helping you live independently.

If you enjoy socializing with others around your age and participating in community events, independent senior living could be a great choice for you. Most independent living communities offer on-site amenities and social programs, so you’ll have ample opportunity to make friends and participate in the activities you love. And because you won’t be responsible for all the upkeep you’d have with a house, you have more free time to enjoy.

Are You Truly Independent?

While independent senior living facilities provide support in terms of making it easier for seniors to live on their own, they are not set up for nursing care and do not offer assistance with things like grooming, bathing, and dressing. If you need assistance with medical care or daily living, assisted living or nursing homes may be better options.

It’s important to think about your health when deciding whether to enter independent senior living. If you foresee needing greater care in the future, you may opt not to choose independent senior living. However, you need not discount independent senior living out of fear that your health will deteriorate in the future. All residents are eligible for home care services through the Yukon government. The services simply are not provided by Normandy Living.

Are You Having Trouble Keeping Up with Your Home?

Home ownership is a source of great pride, but as we age, it can become more difficult to do repairs, mow the lawn, cook, clean, and manage going up and down stairs. If maintaining your home is becoming more of a burden, moving to independent senior living could be the right choice for you. You’ll no longer need to worry about repairs, access and mobility issues, lawn maintenance, or meal preparation. It’s all done for you! That means you have more time to do what you truly enjoy. And our facility is monitored 24/7 so you can feel safe and secure.

How Often Do You See Family and Friends?

Isolation is a major problem for seniors that can lead to loneliness and depression. It also means you might not have the help you need in an emergency or with getting to and from the places you need to go. If you don’t have friends and family nearby who visit often and can help you when necessary, independent senior living could be a good fit for you. Your suite is your home, so you’ll be able to keep your connections and have visitors when you like, but you’ll also be surrounded by friends, be able to participate in activities, and have staff at hand so you’ll be able to be more social and active.
