Ways to Stay Connected From a Distance

Whether you’re taking COVID precautions or simply don’t live as close to friends and family as you’d like, staying connected is important. And thankfully, it’s easier to stay connected now than ever before. Here are some great ways to stay connected from a distance.

Video Chat

There are so many video chat platforms available today. Whether you use Facetime on your phone, Skype on your laptop, Zoom on your tablet, or any of the myriad other platforms available to you, video chatting is one of the best ways to stay connected with loved ones. It may not be the same as visiting in person, but it’s the next best thing.

You’ll be able to see your loved ones as you speak to them, so you won’t miss the pride on your grandson’s face when he shows you his latest baseball trophy, your newest granddaughter taking her first steps, all the fun of your best friend’s party, or chatting with your sister over lunch. Isn’t technology wonderful?

Use Social Media

If you enjoy social media, it can be a fun way to keep up with family and friends who live far away. Seeing the photos they post and posting a few of your own can help everyone feel up to date on the latest goings-on. It’s also a quick way to send a message when you don’t have time for a longer conversation.

Join or Start a Book Club

Having a book club gives you a shared interest to talk about with the other members. Plus, reading keeps you sharp! You’ll enjoy reading and discussing your latest book, and you’ll have a dedicated time to look forward to meeting each week. Holding your meetings via video chat allows friends from far away to join in the fun and is a wonderful way to catch up.

Send a Care Package

Is there anything better than receiving a care package in the mail? Putting together a care package is a physical show of your love. Whether you’re sending it to a friend, distant relative, sibling, child, or grandchild, it’s sure to be appreciated. And it makes you feel good, too! Crafts, handwritten notes, homemade cookies, and thoughtful trinkets are all excellent choices to include.

Use Snail Mail

While email and chat are instant ways to connect, there’s something special about a handwritten letter or card. And if you’re talented at art, why not send along a drawing or painting, too? It’s a personal touch your loved ones are sure to cherish.  And as a bonus, you might just get a handwritten letter in return!

Do an Activity Together

Many of the activities you enjoy doing with friends and family can now be done virtually. Try hosting a movie watch party, take a virtual class together, or take a virtual tour of a museum or favorite destination. You’ll have shared experiences and enjoy discussing them in the future, too! So why not set a time each week to share an activity online?

There are so many ways to stay connected from a distance now that there’s no need to lose touch. Whether you choose to take advantage of new technology or stick to more traditional methods like phone calls and letters, the important thing is to let your loved ones know you care and make time for one another. Who will you reach out to today?
