5 Low-Impact Exercises You Can Do at Any Age
Staying active throughout your life is important for maintaining your health. But if you have stiff, achy joints or old injuries, the thought of exercising can be a daunting one. Thankfully, it is possible to exercise without aggravating your joints, and a good low-impact workout will even help them! Here are five low-impact exercises you can do at any age.
1. Swimming
Swimming is one of the best low-impact exercises you can do, because it targets your entire body all at once. Yet because the water supports your body, the impact to your joints is low. So you can get in some really good aerobic exercise that gets your heart rate up without stressing your joints.
Looking for a place to swim? The Canada Games Centre here in Whitehorse offers a variety of swim times, including accessibility and adult swims, along with classes like, “Oh My Aching Body” to help with chronic pain.
2. Yoga
Yoga is a relaxing, low-impact form of exercise that lowers your stress levels, too! Plus, it can be adapted to any fitness level or physical limitations, making it perfect for people of all ages.
Additionally, practicing yoga on a consistent basis helps you maintain your balance, increase your muscle strength, and gain flexibility. We offer regular yoga classes here at Normandy Living, or you can try online classes from the comfort of your own suite!
3. Cycling
Cycling is another low-impact exercise that is a wonderful way to get your heart rate up without stressing your joints. And you can adjust your workout routine based on your ability or fitness.
Try cycling indoors on the stationary bike in the exercise room, take a relaxed ride around the neighborhood on your bicycle, or add in some hills if you really want to challenge yourself.
4. Tai Chi
Like yoga, Tai Chi is a low-impact form of exercise that improves balance, flexibility, and muscle strength. Many people find it relaxing and helpful for stress relief, as well. During Tai Chi, you slowly progress through different motions, focusing on your breathing and how your body feels.
You can find guided Tai Chi practices online, or keep an eye on our activity schedule for Tai Chi to be offered here at Normandy Living.
5. Walking
Finally, walking is a wonderful low-impact exercise you can do at any age. Whether you walk around Normandy Living, take a stroll while doing your shopping, or head out to one of Whitehorse’s many local hiking trails, you’re sure to get a good workout that’s easy on your joints.
