5 Reasons Seniors Should Spend Time Outdoors & in Nature

One of the best things about living in the Yukon is the abundant natural beauty all around us. We are fortunate to have beautiful natural spaces right outside our door. But did you know that spending time in nature is good for you, too? Here are five reasons seniors should spend time outdoors and in nature.

1. Spending Time Outdoors Increases Physical Activity

Studies have shown that seniors who spend time outdoors are more likely to be physically active. And furthermore, those who choose to engage in physical activity while outdoors also spend more time being active.

These results are likely due to the fact that we enjoy being outdoors, so activities like walking, hiking, cycling, and swimming are more fun than using a machine at the gym. And because we’re having fun, we spend more time doing those activities.

2. Sunlight Raises Your Level of Vitamin D

Vitamin D deficiency is a real problem for seniors. When you don’t have enough vitamin D, you’re at risk for a variety of health conditions, including weakened bones, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and heart disease.

Spending time outdoors gives your body a chance to make vitamin D from sunlight, so it’s a great way to improve your vitamin D levels.

3. Hiking Sharpens Your Brain

Here in Whitehorse, we’re fortunate to have plenty of local trails that are appropriate for any level of experience. So it’s easy to get outdoors and hike. And that’s great news because research has linked hiking with a variety of cognitive benefits like memory, concentration, and retaining new information.

Going hiking also gives you plenty of opportunities for photography and birdwatching, which are wonderful ways to exercise your brain while enjoying the outdoors.

4. Nature Helps You Stay Healthy

Researchers have found that simply being in nature helps our health. Those who spend time in nature have lower rates of stroke, heart disease, and depression. And if you spend time walking in nature, the benefits are even greater.

For example, did you know that spending just two hours a week walking could lower your chances of dying prematurely? And physical activity, like walking, also helps you lower your weight, improve chronic conditions, and even sleep better at night!

5. Spending Time in Nature Is Good for Your Mental Health

Seniors often experience loneliness, depression, and anxiety. But spending time in nature can help. Being outdoors often gives seniors the opportunity to socialize. And nature often helps us feel calm, happy, energetic, and connected to the world around us. Plus, spending time in nature reduces your blood pressure, too!

So take advantage of all the natural beauty around us and spend more time outdoors! Whether you do some gardening in the courtyard, take a walk on a local trail, or visit a park to search for your favorite bird species, spending time outdoors and in nature is a wonderful way to improve your overall health and well being.
