6 Superfoods That Improve Energy for Seniors

Feeling a little sluggish? Your diet may have more of an impact on your energy levels than you think! So if you need a bit more pep in your life, try reaching for these power-packed sources of nutrition. Here are six superfoods that improve energy for seniors.

1. Lentils

Lentils and other legumes are great for improving your energy levels. They’re filling and contain loads of fiber, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Plus, lentils won’t give you that sleepy feeling after you eat them.

Lentils are also rich in selenium, which is important because having too little selenium has been linked to decreased energy, low mood, and brain fog. Try lentils in soups, salads, curries, and dals.

2. Beans

Like lentils, beans are high in fiber and protein, so they’ll fill you up without making you sleepy or causing a sugar crash later in the day. Indeed, beans help regulate your blood sugar so your energy levels stay stable, instead of spiking and dropping throughout the day.

Beans are also very versatile, so you’re sure to find some way you like to eat them. Try beans in chili, bean burgers, edamame, stews, dips, and more!

3. Berries

Berries are chock-full of vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber to help improve and sustain energy levels. Plus, despite being naturally sweet, they are also low in calories. And they may even help prevent diseases like cancer!

There are tons of berries to try, so you never need to feel bored! Add berries to cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, salads, and smoothies. Or just snack on them by themselves!

4. Whole Grains

Whole grains are the perfect superfoods to improve energy for seniors. They’re high in fiber, and your body digests them slowly, so energy is released over time. Plus, they also help reduce your risk of diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and cancer.

Adding whole grains to your diet is as simple as choosing whole grain bread, brown or wild rice, and steel-cut oats instead of their refined counterparts. And don’t worry, whole grains don’t have to be boring. Try having a bowl of oatmeal with berries, yogurt, and nuts for a filling breakfast that will give you tons of energy!

5. Avocados

You’ve probably heard that there are good fats and bad fats. Well, rest assured, avocados fall firmly on the good side! And all that good fat is helpful for improving your energy levels.

Avocados also have lots of vitamins, protein, and fiber, which give you the long-lasting energy you need to get through the day. Try them in guacamole, avocado toast, sushi, or tacos.

6. Dark Chocolate

If you’ve been looking for an excuse to eat more chocolate, here it is! Well, in moderation, of course. Dark chocolate is low in sugar and high in antioxidants. Plus, research has shown that dark chocolate may play a role in helping blood flow through your body. And increased blood flow means your body is also getting additional oxygen, which helps you feel more energized.

Of course, it’s still not a great idea to eat too much chocolate. But because dark chocolate is so rich, you’ll likely be satisfied with a small amount anyway. So enjoy 30 to 60 grams as a snack, drizzle dark chocolate over popcorn, or try chocolate-covered nuts and berries
