5 Ways to Stay Active in the Winter Months

We all know it’s important to stay active, but during winter, it’s so much easier to spend our time snuggled under cozy blankets, watching television and drinking hot chocolate, right? Unfortunately, that’s not great for our health. So how do you avoid spending this winter like a hibernating bear? Here are five ways to stay active in the winter months.

1. Exercise Videos

In today’s world, it’s easier than ever to exercise at home. Many libraries offer free rentals of exercise videos, or you can stream one online. Search for videos that have been created specifically for seniors. Low-impact cardio, stretching, and strengthening are important elements that should be included. Find something you enjoy, and you’ll have fun exercising right in the comfort of your own living room!

2. Virtual Classes

Virtual classes have given many seniors a welcome way to participate, especially after COVID-19 became a concern. You’ll get all the benefits of an in-person class, including instruction and feedback, without ever leaving your home. Why not get a few of your friends to participate in the same class for additional fun? Check with local fitness clubs and senior centers, too. Many now offer virtual classes for local seniors.

3. Take a Walk

It’s important to remember that exercising outdoors in the winter isn’t just uncomfortable; it can also be dangerous. While getting some fresh air can be wonderful, even in winter, take care to do it safely. If there is no snow or ice on the ground, taking a walk outside is a great way to get some exercise.

However, if the weather is bad, walking indoors is a better idea. You won’t have to worry as much about falling on slippery surfaces. You can walk the hallways of your building if you live in an apartment complex or independent living facility. Or take a trip to a local mall or museum and enjoy a walk while you do some shopping or look at the exhibits on display.

4. Socialize

Sometimes, we dread activity because we see it as a chore. Being active with others helps us enjoy it more. If you live in an independent living facility, like Normandy Living, classes and activities are likely available to you. Take advantage of these amenities to socialize and help you stay active during the winter months.

And you don’t have to stick just to organized exercise programs. Walking to visit your neighbors, playing games with your friends, or baking cookies for your grandchildren are all excellent ways to keep your mind and body active.

5. Plan for Movement

If you find it difficult to keep yourself moving in the winter, make an active plan to incorporate movement into your routine. Instead of taking your whole basket of laundry with you, put each item away separately to add in extra steps back and forth. Stretch or do squats while your coffee is brewing or you’re waiting for the microwave to ding. Watch television while using an exercise bike, or spend commercial breaks walking around your home. These extra moments of movement all add up to keep you active and healthy.

Winter makes staying active more challenging, but it’s important for your health. With a little creativity, you’ll be able to stay active all winter long.
