Staying Connected as a Senior: 6 Places to Meet New People

Isolation is a serious concern for seniors. In fact, social isolation is linked to a whole host of negative outcomes, including depression, dementia, disability, and even premature death. Maintaining social connections, then, is critical, yet that can become challenging as we age and our life circumstances change.

If your social circle is dwindling, it’s time to make new friends, and you may find that it’s easier to do than you think! Here are six places to meet new people.

1. Senior Center

Odds are good that your city has a senior center, and that’s a great place to begin looking for new friends. You’re sure to meet people your age, who likely have similar life circumstances. Plus, senior centers often offer activities, meals, and outings, so you can easily get to know new people without the stress of awkward introductions. It’s as simple as saying hi during a meal, chatting to the person next to you on the bus, or joining in a card game.

2. Volunteering

Volunteering is an excellent way to meet new people. Just find a cause you’re interested in, and sign up. Organizations are always looking for more volunteers, so your time will be appreciated, and you’ll meet new people who care about the same things you do. Plus, you can feel good knowing you’re helping others. Food banks, hospitals, shelters, and conservation societies are all wonderful places to start.

3. Hobbies and Clubs

Participating in hobbies you love naturally introduces you to new people. Although it can sometimes feel intimidating to join a new club, it’s a superb way to meet people with whom you already have common ground. So join a bowling league, attend a dance, sign up for a book club, take a yoga class, or become a member of a choir. Whatever recreational activity you choose, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy yourself and meet new friends along the way.

4. Gym

Many gyms have classes tailored specifically to seniors, so they can be terrific places to meet new people. Although you could attend the gym to do your own workout routine and hope to meet people while you’re there, signing up for a class is a sure way to see familiar faces each time you go. Try to choose a class you find enjoyable so you look forward to attending every week, and come a little early to have time to chat with your classmates before your workout begins.

5. Places of Worship

If you practice a particular faith, attending a church, synagogue, mosque, or other place of worship may provide you with an inclusive place to meet new people. Many places of worship welcome new members and will make introductions for you. They also often offer activities, groups, and meals on a regular basis, so you have an opportunity to socialize outside of worship.

6. Independent Living Community

Although making a move to an independent living community may seem daunting, joining a community of other seniors could be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made. You’ll be surrounded by other seniors, so meeting new people is as simple as walking out your door! Saying hi to your neighbors, having meals in the dining room, and participating in recreational activities at your independent living community are all marvelous ways to meet new people and make new friends.

At Normandy Living, we offer an array of social and recreational activities geared toward our residents’ needs and interests, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet new friends. Interested in joining us? Just fill out this form for priority consideration.
